""The Shade of My Day" was the last song written/ recorded for the album. I was working on a synth arrangement for "Summer '08" when I started playing the main chords and melody for the song and immediately stopped everything else to work on this new idea. I recorded a few rough tracks so I wouldn't forget it, and wrote half the lyrics, all in about 10 minutes one evening. The next morning, I immediately got up, and finished the lyrics in another 5, completing the songwriting. It was something that just came and went so quickly, and while I wasn't sure if we would have enough time to complete it to put it on the record (see "The Day I Grew So Old"), I'm glad that Trisha and I cranked it out because I think it really does pull the whole thing together. Lyrically it ties into several other songs on the record (I consider it the second half to "Wasted Time") and it creates a nice closing alongside "Coming Home".
On a side note, Trisha had originally made a collection of recordings on her own several years back titled "The Shade of My Day", and while going through her songs to pick which to re-record for Woody's a Girl, I really loved that title and it just stuck with me. When writing the lyrics to this song, the phrase just poured out so naturally with the rest of the words that I felt it was a perfect title, and a nice little wink to Rotting Apples' sister project. "The Shade of My Day" is a personal favorite of mine, and I'm glad it came together as quickly and easily as it did."

"The Shade of My Day" should theoretically have been one of the more challenging songs to sing, since I had to sing down pretty low in parts. And yet those lower notes seemed to come easily, and the song itself didn't take too long at all to complete. In fact, I did one take which was me actually learning the song, and the second take was the one that appears on the album - a far cry from some of the other multi-take tracks I've worked on for both my own albums and Billy's.
I am pretty sure this was the most recent song written for the album - created by Billy in 2014, the same year of the album's release. Billy told me at the time that it was influenced by my own albums under the WAG moniker, which was very flattering. But what else can I say about this tune, except I think it's great - and my dad said it was his favourite song on the album.

lyrics
"The Shade of My Day" lyrics:
Ring the last bell
That I knew so well, long gone
And our fallen sounds
They're marked in the ground, buried
The shade of my day
The words I would say, fading
Well everyone's gone
We've waited too long
I wish I could follow
I saw you again
So this is the end
The words were so hollow
Misled and tried
My words won't apply, they worry
But if I go through
I'll still look for you, out there
But know that someday
That we all could say, we were there
Impatient I know
The future will show
In dreams I've been haunted
The memories I hold
My heart getting old
The life that I've wanted
