"Of the over 400 songs I've written in my life thus far, "Wasted Time" is definitely in my personal Top 5. I really love this song, and it couldn't have turned out better in my mind. I re-discovered the melody one day in a 2 year old collage of improvised synth ideas I had been working on for my friend's cartoon project and thought it could work fantastically as a full song. So I set about writing it out, a little at a time, over the course of about a week in late 2011/ early 2012. The lyrics are still some of my absolute favorites, and my mind still can't accept that I actually wrote them.
I remember getting the recording with vocals back from Trisha in Sept. 2012, and being absolutely blown away by how it sounded. I listened to it on repeat at least 30 times, moved by its beauty, its depth, and its power. It captured a lot of how I was feeling in that weird transitionary stage of my life, regrets of the past and hopes for the future. In a sense, the whole album ended up being a part of that idea.
An interesting anecdote: once everything minus the solo had been recorded I felt it reminded me in a lot of ways of the Beatles circa-"Rubber Soul" era and thought it would be a neat homage to include a harpsichord solo to the bridge (think "In My Life"). While I had an idea of how I wanted it to sound, my fingers just could not move fast enough to capture it. So I slowed down the music to half speed and in probably 3 takes, got the solo exactly how I wanted it. It was at this moment that a memory flashed into my head of an old friend/ Beatles aficionado who relayed that when the Beatles were recording "In My Life", George Martin ran into the same trouble recording that song's solo, so they slowed the tape down to half speed and he tracked it the exact same way…"

"August 2012 was when I first heard the instrumental version of “Wasted Time”, saw the lyrics I was going to be singing, and heard the vocal melody that had been mapped out. This was one of those songs that challenged me as I was having to sing pretty high. Listening to the album version now, I do remember some of my most strained attempts at hitting those high notes during recording sessions. Some days you can do it easily, and other days your voice just won’t cooperate! But I’m very happy with the way the album version sounds, and I think I am particularly fond of the bridge, and how the song ends.
“Wasted Time” is one of those songs that has a magical ‘moonlit adventure’ feel to it, for me at least. But the lyrics tell a different story, a bit of a mythical, sad one at times, but also an inspiring one!"

lyrics
Lyrics:
I am a reason
Misplaced, out of touch
Carried outside, always
They don't mean much
I am beneath questions
Answers are mine
I crawl through hours
And dissolve in time
You once were mine
I'll be there for you
Saved from what they put you through
I've made up my mind
Days, I've wasted time
Memories I'm hopeless to
Place through my days
For all the people we knew,
Friends we made
I am a secret you've
Kept all along
Carried through nights when
You knew I was wrong
You've suffered too long
I'll be there for you
Saved from what they put you through
I've made up my mind
Days, I've wasted time
Sorrows adrift
In the age of desire
Course through the veins of
A beauty inspired
There is no way back
Across my front lawn
So rings the bells of a
Girl before dawn
She's moving on...
You are the reason I've
Crossed out of time
Waking reminds me
All I've left behind.
